I got to know John in London Village, back in the 90’s (like several other Clog members), where he was a regular walk leader even then, and John was then known for his untied shoes laces and sometimes ending walks with us running for the train (though we always managed to catch). What I remember most is that John’s walks and trips were always enjoyable, and I’m grateful that he devoted so much of his time to organising and leading them.
I was fortunate to keep in touch with John since the LV days, and, apart from walking, John has had varied passions, not least Man U, his politics, sipping pints and just doing lots of different things. In recent times John took up parkruns, not only being pretty fast (about 20 minutes he informed me) but he also ran there and back from his home. John had an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the characters he’d met over the years, so always had a few stories to tell. John also seemed to always remain calm and never get stressed, even when problems happened like with his car or his lodgers, or he couldn’t find the corkscrew at his bbq.
Above all I remember John as one of the most considerate, modest and friendliest guys you could meet.
John, you will be sorely missed, but you have left behind many fond memories, which we will always be grateful for.
