An amusing anecdote about John's final CLOG Meet to Dartmoor.

Late October, last year. Our hostel was just outside the town of Oakhampton. Not that far to walk from the station but it involved a steep road climb and quite confusing in the dark with no street lights. John had spent some time in a pub and left on his own to make his way to the hostel. At a crucial T-junction on the edge of town John turned right,(he should have turned left!)  After much road walking he couldn't understand why it took so long to reach the beginning of the steep climb. And then he 'found it'. The road climbed and climbed into the night sky...... I met John at the hostel for breakfast the following morning. It was the early hours before he'd finally reached the sanctuary of the Y.H.A.!    Now lets put this into context. As a long 'serving' member of CLOG I would put Bob C and John E as the very best walk leaders we have had in the club. John travelled the world and you were always safe in his hands however rough the terrain.  Another enigma of the man!
